Are you wasting money on scent control?
What don't know about Deer Scenting Capability?
- Deer seem to be designed for smelling for air scent more than ground scent
- how does a deer perceive strong odors like gasoline
- Cover scents, do they work?
- Is it possible to overwhelm a deer or dog's nose so they can't smell?
- What products can make a dogs nose not to work
- Can deer become accustomed to human odor/scent?
- Can a deer tell if the same person is back in the woods based on the person's scent signature?

I amaze the hell out of my Dad. It could take me an hour to go 100 yards. Depends on how much cover there is and how the ground cover is. It works when nothing seems to be moving.

I'm here in the Arkansas River Valley. North of the Quchitas and South of the Ozarks. How can I learn and identify the food sources for whitetails? On the public land I hunt, there are GIANTS and several mature bucks that are elusive to most hunters here. This public land is what I would call Water Oak country. So in my opinion, their food source is red oak acorns via the water oaks. What else do they eat that I can watch for, here in the Arkansas River Valley? Thx

I hunt mtn big woods all my life 1800ftvto 2500ft steep long mtn with bench 3/4 way up not deeply defined fingers but a few dotted across the section. Shallow gulleys/drainages are majority coming off benchs downhill with 400ft elevation drop to bottoms. Mostly logged high stem count stuff with dotted in big hardwoods clean tracts. Briar thickets galore. Only bottom access 200ft limestone cliffs run the top of mtn and no real drivable access to those either. About the rattling or grunting mtn deer in statement. For 24yrs i woukd have agreed strongly to it does not work the deer do not care in the appslachian chain. However last year and only lastyear i raised hell with a grunt about 12 hunts and by raising hell i mean loud, alot and roaring 10second long buck gone wild grunts. 7-9 of these 12 hunts of doing so i got grunts returned within shooting range if not stem count thick and if id had better setups i would have likely killed one of the grunters! Once on edge of bench 15minutes after dark i had waited to hear what id have thought was the buck i was after when or how long after dark he was coming out! 15minutes i heard walking 50-70yds above me and i went to cutting a rug thp style but turned up seriously and the deer was a buck ( obviously couldnt see it) started grunting back and came straight to me i could see his silhouette only at 15yds he ran back up hill i waited a few minutes cut loose again here he came same 15ish yds and after same dark staredown he trotted away up and right i waited a few mins went 50yds toward him up on bench cut loose again and he came right back then it was over. Wild experience and something to think on. Long 10second grumbles, tending grunts and l9ng loud sequences i shit you not most wouldnt believe if i could do it for them but i had 3/4 success with any bit of brain used on setups or been in a damn tree ida got one or seen more of em gauranteed

Anyone who has been hunting for more than a few years (45 years here) would conclude that the absolute answer to everything deer hunting is "it depends". My experience has shown that usually if unpressured they walk so they can wind check the thickest surrounding cover, and trust their eyes and ears for what they perceive to be the less threatening direction. But if they are bird-dogging does in the rut, or there has been a month of hunting pressure, you can pretty much forget the wind as it pertains to bucks, and pay attention to not spooking the does. I hunt mainly Michigan farm country with big ag fields and sporadic thickets and woodlots...but when I hunt Southern Ohio and Kentucky hill country, I see most unpressured bucks bedding on and traveling the mid-line on ridges with the prevailing wind coming from uphill where they can't see, and they seem to use their eyes and ears to watch the bottoms. So if you can avoid hunting the hilltops and bottoms and get halfway down the hill with your wind blowing into the bottom, you up the chances of maybe one traveling the ridge under your scent cone. Just gotta be far enough down the hill that you aren't skylighted.
